On Feeling Inadequate !%?@#&

What does inadequacy look like? If I had that job, I will be able to do more. I just need to go back to school and get that degree. If I change the way I wear my hair, I will get that job. If I did this for my children, they would appreciate me. And all the other endless things we say that if we just did or had. Inadequacy. I have felt inadequate in a lot of ways and unfortunately I still struggle with it.

Inadequate. I looked up the definition and it said “lacking the quality or quantity required; insufficient for a purpose.” No matter who you are, there are ways in which you feel inadequate. I feel inadequate as a sibling. As a mom. As a partner. As an employee. As a friend. As a child of God. There’s the natural desire to ‘fix’ our inadequacies with things that we think will add to our quality or quantity. And what ends up happening? It’s still not adequate!!

Everything you have and everything you are able to do, it is with God’s help. He’s always working things out.

II Cor 3:5 NIV - Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.

None of us can claim to be adequate without God’s help. We cannot carry out our calling on our own. We need the Holy Spirit to help us in our inadequacy.

So on days when my children are doing everything opposite of what I’ve asked them to do and I question my calling as a mom LOL and start to spiral down the inadequacy rabbit hole, I remember in His word.

II Cor 12:9 TPT -'But he answered me, “My grace is always more than enough for you, and my power finds its full expression through your weakness.” So I will celebrate my weaknesses, for when I’m weak I sense more deeply the mighty power of Christ living in me. '

He said His grace is all I need because His power is greatest when I am weak. Even in my inadequacies, He is there. So in the beginning I said unfortunately I struggle with inadequacy but it might actually be a good thing after all because I know I can rest in His grace.

What are some ways you feel inadequate?
